Maryland Kicks Off Bike Month with Safety-Focused Events
In celebration of Governor Wes Moore proclaiming May to be Bike Month, the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) today announced a series of events highlighting the importance of bike safety, equitable access and healthy lifestyles. The events further the Department’s Serious About Safety initiative to protect lives and reduce the number of road fatalities, especially for those who walk, bike and roll. MDOT encourages people of all ages to join in and pedal along for the month-long celebration.
“Just like using a bus, train or car, biking is a primary way Marylanders travel to work, school and access life’s opportunities,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Katie Thomson. “Safety is a shared responsibility. I urge everyone to join me in putting safety first as they enjoy this Bike Month. Share the road and give each other space. Together, we can enjoy the Spring weather and reach our destinations safely.”
Bike Month events show biking as a fun, healthy and sustainable activity while also highlighting connectivity across the state. This year’s events include:
- Bike & Roll to School Day May 6 – This national celebration promotes safe routes to school. Find out if your school is registered on the national walk, bike and roll to school website. Learn more about Maryland’s safe routes to school program here.
- MDOT in Motion Webinars – Join MDOT’s Office of Active Transportation and Micromobility for two live webinars detailing Bike Month activities and the latest information about biking in Maryland.
- May 7, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. – Biking to Work & Multimodal Commutes. This webinar is a collaborative session led by MDOT’s Office of Active Transportation and Micromobility in partnership with Commuter Choice Maryland. The webinar will explore how Marylanders commute, the incentives businesses can offer their employees and tips for multimodal commutes. Register here.
- May 21, 11:30 a.m. -1 p.m. – Micromobility, The New Vehicles on the Block. Join a deep dive into micromobility and learn where to get reliable information about everything from e-bikes and e-scooters to vehicles available for purchase online. Register here.
- Bike to Work Week May 11-15 – All week-long, MDOT is sponsoring events across the State such as group rides and pit stops to promote bike commuting. Find your closest event at Bike to Work Central Maryland and Bike to Work DC.
MDOT is proud to celebrate and actively partner to support Bike Month, including advancing measures to enhance safety across the state’s transportation system. Implementation continues on the Department’s Complete Streets policy, which guides the deliberate approach to planning, designing and constructing streets that are safe for all users, including cyclists and pedestrians of all ages and abilities.
MDOT also provides grants to support new local bike infrastructure through the Kim Lamphier Bikeways Network Grant Program. The Bikeways program is currently accepting applications through May 31.
