Maryland Primary – County Races Certified


The final count of mail-in ballots was done yesterday in Maryland’s Primary Election, which was held on June 23. State races have not yet been certified, however the county races have.

In the Worcester County Commissioners races – Republican Caryn Abbot will return to the District 1 seat. In District 2, Roxie Dennis will take over after defeating incumbent Diana Purnell. Incumbent Eric Fiori retains his District 3 seat. In District 4 Steve Green defeated incumbent Ted Elder and former commissioner Virgil Shockley. District 5 – challenger Joe Schanno has ousted incumbent Chip Bertino by 31 votes. In District 6 former Worcester County School Superintendent Lou Taylor easily won that race over Sherrie Clifford. Incumbent Joe Mitrecic ran unopposed for the District 7 seat.

Worcester County Sheriff Matt Crisafulli will return to office as well.

None of these races are challenged in the November General Election.

In Wicomico County, the County Council will be expanding to 7 district Council members. The Council has had 5 district members and 2 at-large members. Those at-large seats are being replaced with two additional district seats. In District 1 – incumbent Shanie Shields topped Bernadette Cannady and returns to the Council. District 2 incumbent James Winn won the GOP primary – over Patrick Adkins and will face Democrat Jim Adkins in November. The District 4 battle of the Erins went to Erin Patterson winning the Democratic primary over Aaron Guy. Patterson takes on Republican Bobby Lee Leath in November. In District 5 – Republican Joe Holloway did not seek re-election and will retire from the Council at the end of his term. Joe White won the Republican primary over Ben Jorden. Sheriff Mike Lewis easily won a challenge from Scott Hamilton in the primary – he now faces Democrat Lana Foley in the General Election in November.

Dorchester County will have a new Sheriff in November. Republican Mike Lewis defeated incumbent Sheriff James Phillips in the GOP race. Lewis will face Democrat Christine Lamonica in November. Lamonica bested LeRoi Robinson-Grant in the Democratic primary.

The Dorchester County Council had only two primary elections. Democrat Yvonne Penn topped incumbent William Nichol for the District 2 seat. Penn will take that seat with no Republican challenger in November. In District 5, Democrat Semuel Thompson, Jr. bested Christopher Posko – Thompson will face Republican incumbent Mike Detmer in the November General Election.

For Dorchester County Register of Wills Walter “Dan” Kurth won a Republican primary race with Andrew Citrone – Kurth now challenges Democrat incumbent Terry Wheatley in November.
