NY Beach Patrol Member Charged after Vandalism in Dewey Beach

Dewey Beach Police have arrested a New York man after receiving a report of vandalism on the beach near Dickinson Avenue on July 10th. Police saw six individuals on the beach – when police tried to contact them several ran off.

One person was spotted carrying wood matching the wood used on the Dewey Beach lifeguard stands – and further investigation showed that three stands had been dragged into the ocean – a total of 5 stands were damaged. Police also found other signs of vandalism.

Police arrested 18 year old Mateo Gomez of Long Beach, New York who is charged with multiple offenses:

  • Criminal Mischief 
  • Hindering Prosecution
  • Disorderly Conduct   
  • Conspiracy 
  • Underage Consumption of Alcohol 
  • Violation of Beach Curfew

Gomez was released on his own recognizance.

Police say all who were identified in this incident are associated with the Long Beach Beach Patrol – who were in town for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Lifesaving Association Championships.
