Ocean City man struck, killed in crash near Fenwick Island

An Ocean City man was killed after a vehicle struck him while we has walking down Route 1 near Fenwick Island.

According to the Delaware State Police Department, the crash occurred around 3:20 a.m., Wednesday as a 2016 Jeep Patriot was traveling southbound on Route 1 in the right lane about a mile north of Fenwick Island.

A pedestrian was either walking or standing in the right lane, facing south, according to police.

The driver of the Patriot, a 23-year-old Georgetown man, was unable to perceive the pedestrian, who was wearing all dark clothing and not using a light. As a result, the front of the vehicle struck the pedestrian in the right lane.

The pedestrian, a 44-year-old male Ocean City man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin.

The crash remains under investigation.
