Ocean City Police Arrest Five on Handgun Violations

Ocean City Police tried to stop a vehicle driving without headlights around 17th Street and Baltimore Avenue Monday night around 11. The driver failed to stop. Several times various officers tried to stop the vehicle as the driver ran red lights and made unsafe lane changes, until an officers at 59th Street successfully deployed stop sticks, but the vehicle continued over Route 90 with one flat tire as police broadcast a description of the vehicle. Police spotted the vehicle stopped on the western bridge – four people got out then the vehicle continued on Route 90. Police spotted one suspect throw a bag into the bay. All four were detained and frisked and one handgun was found. OCPD found the vehicle and driver at a gas station on Racetrack Road/Route 589 in Berlin where the driver was arrested.

Maryland Natural Resources Police recovered the floating bag under the bridge which contained a loaded handgun.

All five are from Virginia – 3 of them juveniles. All face handgun violations.

Through a coordinated effort between the Ocean City Police Department, the Maryland Department of Natural Resource Police, and the Maryland State Police the following five arrests were made:

  • Ibrahim Santwa Kanu, 19, Woodbridge, VA: Possession of firearm/ammunition as a minor, handgun on person, loaded handgun on person, loaded handgun in a vehicle, handgun in a vehicle, negligent driving, reckless driving, attempt by the driver to elude uniformed police by failing to stop and 35 additional traffic citations. Kanu is currently being held at the Ocean City Police Department awaiting to be seen by a Maryland District Court Commissioner.
  • Matthewos Mulugeta, 20, Arlington, VA: Possession of firearm/ammunition as a minor, loaded handgun in a vehicle, and handgun in a vehicle. Mulugeta is currently being held at the Ocean City Police Department awaiting to be seen by a Maryland District Court Commissioner.
  • Juvenile #1, 17, Alexandria, VA: Possession of firearm/ammunition as a minor, loaded handgun in a vehicle, and a handgun in a vehicle. Juvenile #1 has been waived to adult status. Juvenile #1 is currently being held at the Ocean City Police Department awaiting to be seen by a Maryland District Court Commissioner.
  • Juvenile #2, 16, Lorton, VA: Possession of firearm/ammunition as a minor, loaded handgun in a vehicle, and a handgun in a vehicle. Juvenile #2 has been waived to adult status. Juvenile #2 is currently being held at the Ocean City Police Department awaiting to be seen by a Maryland District Court Commissioner.
  • Juvenile #3, 17, Lorton, VA: Possession of firearm/ammunition as a minor, loaded handgun in a vehicle, and a handgun in a vehicle. Juvenile #3 has been waived to adult status. Juvenile #3 is currently being held at the Ocean City Police Department awaiting to be seen by a Maryland District Court Commissioner.
