UPDATED: Arrest in Deadly Ellendale Shooting Incident Sunday, June 9th

UPDATED – 07/26/24 – A 14 year old from Millsboro has been indicted by a Sussex County Grand Jury on charged of 1st degree murder in the shooting death of 17 year old Ahniya Coverdale in Ellendale on June 9th. Delaware State Police were called to North Old State Road, and learned that the 17 year old had been taken to the Ellendale Fire Company and then to an area hospital where she died. A 19 year old man was also injured in the shooting – and treated for a gunshot wound to the leg. Investigation led police to identify 14 year old Angelo Rodriguez of Millsboro as the suspect – he was indicted on Monday and arrested Tuesday on the following charges:

  • Murder 1st Degree (Felony)
  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Felony) – 3 counts
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony) – 2 counts
  • Assault 1st Degree (Felony)
  • Reckless Endangering 1st Degree (Felony) – 8 counts
  • Theft of a Firearm (Felony)

Rodriguez was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3, and committed to Stevenson House Detention Center on a $300,000 cash bond.

UPDATED – 06/17/24 – Delaware State Police have identified 17 year old Ahniya Coverdale of Harrington as the victim of the homicide that occurred in Ellendale on June 9, 2024. The Homicide Unit is still actively investigating this incident. ORIGINAL STORY – 06/10/24 – Delaware State Police were called to an area in the 12000 block on North Old State Road for a shooting around 4:30pm. Police learned that a 17 year old female had been shot – and taken to the Ellendale Fire Company – and taken by ambulance to an area hospital where she died. A second victim – a 19 year old man – also went to an area hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. Police say their preliminary investigation reveals that a fight broke out between several people when someone pulled a gun and fired several shots into the crowd hitting the two victims.
