Rehoboth Beach Public Library Temporarily Closed – Property for 2nd Site Purchased

In June of 2024 the Rehoboth Beach Public Library Board of Trustees announced plans to purchase land on Warrington Road for a 2nd library. According to the Cape Gazette – the property on Warrington Road has been purchased – a 5-acre parcel across from the Beebe Healthcare Specialty Surgical Hospital – that cost about $2-million. This location will also allow for more parking than is available at the downtown Rehoboth Beach location.

According to the Library’s website, the Rehoboth Beach Public Library on Rehoboth Ave is closed or has “temporarily paused” services until December 8th as they prepare for renovations to the building. During this pause – no items will be available for checkout and the book drop is closed. Anyone with due dates that fall during this time have been changed to December 9 so no fines will be charged. Certain programs will still be offered – but will take place off-site – check the library calendar for more information.  If you would still like to place a book on hold, we recommend temporarily changing your hold pickup location to a nearby library (i.e. Lewes, South Coastal) so that you can still receive it. A reminder – the digital collection is always open.

Rehoboth Beach City officials say the sidewalk in front of the library will be impacted by the renovation work – and the sidewalk will be at least partially closed beginning after Thanksgiving, but officials hope to have pedestrian-friendly and accessible routes throughout the project – especially during the summer season.

Demo at current location on some walls to begin on December 18 – some walls to be removed to make way for 3 new study rooms. While the actual renovation work is being done, there may be some periodic closures, but the plans are to keep the library open as much as possible.  The library renovation is expected to be completed in late 2026 or early 2027 – but the facility will remain open with intermittent pauses as needed.
