After ten years in the Delaware House of Representatives, Republican Steve Smyk is shifting his focus to run for State Senate.

Smyk told WGMD’s Mike Bradley Tuesday that he hopes to serve even more constituents in the redrawn 6th District. State Senator Ernie Lopez, also a Republican, has decided not to seek reelection.

“I’ll serve them. I think that’s what matters. My wife is behind me – she doesn’t like that I’m in politics; it takes way too much time for me,” Smyk said. “But, if you’re not living life to serve others, than you’re not living.”
Three Democratic candidates have also filed in the 6th Senate District.
Before he was elected in 2012, Smyk was president of the Delaware State Troopers Association. He retired after serving 24 years as a Delaware State Trooper.
