UPDATED – 10/14/23Funeral services for Carter Figgs will be held on Sunday. Visitation for family and friends will be from 11am to 1pm at Delmar High School. The funeral service will begin at 1pm. Internment will follow the service at St. Stephen’s Cemetery in Delmar. Memorial donations may be made in Carter Figgs Memory to the Delmar Athletic Booster Club, 200 N. 8th Street, Delmar, DE 19940

UPDATED – 10/09/23 – 4:30pm – Salisbury Police say that the fatal crash early Saturday morning was a single vehicle into a utility pole at South Salisbury Boulevard and Lloyd Street. There were 4 male occupants in the vehicle – three 17 year olds and one 16 year old. One 17 year old and the 16 year old were found outside of the vehicle and in need of medical attention and were taken to Tidal Heath Peninsula Regional by Salisbury EMS.

Investigation by Salisbury and Maryland State Police revealed that a 17 year old was operating the vehicle driving southbound at a high rate of speed and crossed into the northbound lanes colliding with the utility pole. One passenger, 16 year old Carter Figgs was pronounced dead by medical staff from injuries in the crash – the other passenger remains in critical but stable condition.

The 17 year old driver was suspected of being under the influence and arrested – and later released into the custody of his guardian. He is charged with multiple offenses:

  • Criminal negligent manslaughter by vehicle 
  • Homicide by motor vehicle
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol per se
  • Driving while impaired by alcohol 
  • Reckless driving
  • Negligent driving
  • Exceeding maximum speed limit
  • Failure to drive right of center
  • Failure to control speed to avoid collision

UPDATED – 10/08/23 6amSalisbury Police continue to investigate a deadly vehicle crash early Saturday morning and have arrested the driver in that crash which occurred in the area of South Salisbury Boulevard and Lloyd Street. There were several juveniles in the vehicle and police report one died in the crash and another is in critical condition. They ask anyone with information to contact Salisbury PD at 410-548-3165

UPDATED – 7pm – Delmar Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Andrew O’Neal released this statement on the fatal crash that left a Delmar student dead. 

The Delmar School District wishes to make the following statement:
 
On behalf of the entire Delmar School District community, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of one of our dear students and to all those who are suffering due to his heartbreaking loss.  We join the community in sharing our thoughts and prayers as we all endure the shock of this unspeakable tragedy.  The entirety of our community is reeling, in pain, and in deep sorrow.   We are grateful to our neighbors, as Wicomico County Public Schools and our nearby Delaware school districts offered additional counselors to be on hand to support our students and staff in supplement to the assistance we will be providing in the coming days.  We are sure that further private and public efforts will be underway in short order to express the community’s outpouring of support for the family at this most difficult of times.

Salisbury Police are investigating a vehicle crash early Saturday morning. Police say this is a fatal crash which occurred around 12:30 in the area of South Salisbury Boulevard and Lloyd Street.
