Sussex County Memorial Day Service on The Circle in Georgetown – Sunday, May 24

The traditional Sussex County Memorial Day Service will be held on The Circle in Georgetown, Sunday, May 24th at 1:30pm sponsored by the Georgetown Kiwanis Club and the Korean War Veterans Association.

The Keynote speech “Community Service” will be delivered by retired Lieutenant Colonel John Fisher, US Amy. A Blue Hen graduate from Seaford, he served in Iraq, Afghanistan and Mali. A pilot, he was also Commandant of the Delaware OCS Academy.

The Master of Ceremonies will be State Senator Brian Pettyjohn of Georgetown. The invocation and benediction will be offered by The Venerable Archdeacon Peter Cornell, of St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Georgetown.

Robin Airey, Chaplain for American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 28, in Millsboro will expound on the 22-A-Day memorial now being installed at Post 28.

Cathy Gorman of Georgetown will return to sing the National Anthem and America the Beautiful. The audience is encouraged to sing along.

Memorial wreathes will be placed by local veterans’ groups and service organizations in tribute to those who died in the World Wars, Korea, Viet Nam, and the more recent conflicts to protect our freedoms. Assisting will be members of Troop 95, Boy Scouts of America.

Members of the 198th Signal Battalion of the Delaware National Guard, based at the Georgetown Armory, will perform the rifle salute.

Taps and Echo Taps will be performed by Sussex Central senior Aijenia Denisse Mata and band director Ben Ables.

The program is scheduled to last about 50 minutes. Limited seating is provided on The Circle. Attendees may also choose to bring comfortable folding chairs.  This will be held rain or shine.
