CORRECTION: Two Seats Up for Election on the Georgetown Town Council – Filing Deadline – April 17th

CORRECTION:  Two seats on the Georgetown Town Council will be up for election on Saturday, May 9th. Candidates interested in running for the 3rd and 4th Ward seats have until Friday, April 17th at 5pm to file as a candidate. You must be at least 21 years old, a citizen of the United States and the State of Delaware and a resident of the 1st or 2nd Ward. The Mayor’s seat is also up for election.

Anyone who wishes to vote in the municipal election has until May 6th to register with the Sussex County Department of Elections on North Race Street.

Qualifications for Candidates:
Pursuant to Charter of the Town of Georgetown, §3.2: The qualifications for Mayor and Town Council member at the time of their election shall be in accordance with 15 Del. C. § 7555(c)(1), (c)(2) and (c)(3) as amended amended[1] and shall also include:
    1. The Mayor shall be twenty-one (21) years of age, a citizen of the United States, the State of Delaware, a bona fide resident of the Town of Georgetown.  
    2. The Town Councilperson from the Third Ward shall be twenty-one (21) years of age, a citizen of the United States, the State of Delaware, a bona fide resident of the Town of Georgetown, and a bona fide resident of the Third Ward.  
    3. The Town Councilperson from the Fourth Ward shall be twenty-one (21) years of age, a citizen of the United States, the State of Delaware, a bona fide resident of the Town of Georgetown, and a bona fide resident of the Fourth Ward.

Terms of Office:
Town Council terms of office shall be for a period of two (2) years.
 
Absentee Voting
Any registered voter of the Town of Georgetown, who is unable to appear on the day of the election for a qualifying reason under Town Code, §39-1 and who wishes to vote by absentee voting, may do so by obtaining an “Affidavit for Absentee Voting” at the Town Administrative Offices. Absentee ballots will be available Monday, April 20, 2026. Following the submission of a qualifying affidavit, an absentee ballot can either be picked up by the voter personally at the Town Administrative Offices or mailed. All absentee ballots must be received by Friday, May 8, 2026 at 4:00pm.
