UPDATE: Victim Identified in Laurel Area Fatal Crash

UPDATED–1/25/23 9:35 am–Delaware State Police have released the name of the 21-year-old who died in a crash involving a school bus Monday afternoon. In their news release, they mistakenly identified this person as a woman. The driver of the Honda Civic–Taylor Maurer of Millsboro–was pronounced dead at the scene.

UPDATED – 1/24/23 12:10pm – A crash between a Sussex Montessori Charter School bus and a Honda Civic occurred just after 3:45 Monday afternoon. Delaware State Police say the Civic was southbound on East Trap Pond Road and failed to stop for a posted stop sign – moving into the intersection at Hardscrabble Road – into the path of a school bus. The bus driver tried to avoid the crash – and struck the passenger side of the Civic. The Civic overturned and left the roadway – the bus also went off the roadway and overturned onto its left side. The bus driver – a 34 year old woman from Bridgeville was wearing her seat belt and was treated for non-life threatening injuries. One student was flown to an are hospital with serious injuries – 12 other students were treated for minor injuries and released. The driver of the Civic – a 21 year old Millsboro woman – was not wearing a seat belt and pronounced dead at the scene.

Delaware State Police are investigating a crash on Hardscrabble Road at East Trap Pond Road near Laurel. Police say the crash occurred at 3:46 and did involve a school bus. Sussex Montessori posted that school officials were with their students at the hospital and that all are safe and with their families. State Police report there was one death in the crash – in the other vehicle. Emergency personnel from multiple fire companies in Sussex and Wicomico Counties as well as paramedic units were on the scene or providing backup. DelDOT reopened the roadway just before 3am.
