The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season comes to an end today with Delmarva once again spared from a hurricane coming ashore, although several passed off the coast bringing rough seas, strong rip currents and beach erosion and property damage.

The East Coast did see one storm make  landfall – Tropical Storm Chantal (#3 on the map), which arrived near Litchfield Beach, SC on July 6th.  Winds from this storm were near 60mph when it made landfall.  Delmarva received remnants from this storm as it moved to the north.

NOAA officials say the season fell within predicted ranges for named storms, hurricanes and major hurricanes – but  the US was mostly spared.  There were 13 named storms, 5 became hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes (Gabrielle – Cat 4 and Erin, Humberto and Melissa – Cat 5).

An average season has 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.
