WGMD Fishing Report 8-28-19

Tuesday was my wife Barbara’s birthday and since the weather was too bad to take her fishing, I took her to lunch at the Big Chill.  This is the restaurant on top of the bathhouse at Indian River Inlet.  It has a great view of the inlet and the ocean and both were unsuitable for any type of fishing.  I checked out the northside after we left and while there were three guys fishing, I never saw them catch anything.

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission has taken emergency action to change their striped bass regulations.  Beginning with the fall season on October 4, the maximum size will be 36 inches and the bag limit will be one fish per day.  The mesh size for commercial nets in the bay will be seven inches and it will be nine inches in the ocean.  This is before the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission meets to finalize their recommendations.  I covered the VMRC during the 1990s and for them to take a pro active stance is earth shaking.
