Worcester County Secures State Grant for Newark Water System Modernization Project

Worcester County Government has secured a nearly $613,400 grant from the Maryland Department of the Environment to replace aging and potentially lead-containing water service lines in the Newark Service Area. County officials say the project will improve water quality, pressure, and reliability while upgrading infrastructure and strengthening protections against water contamination, pending final federal approval. The improvements are intended to address public health concerns associated with older piping materials and plumbing systems dating back to the 1970s, when the water system was originally installed. The start of design work remains contingent upon final concurrence from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on the grant award.
