Governor Meyer Views Damage in Bethany Beach from the Nor’easter

Governor Matt Meyer visited Bethany Beach Tuesday as part of a tour of damage from the weekend nor’easter. While the damage in Bethany Beach and the other coastal towns was bad – there was no loss of life or injury. And while the coastal areas took a big hit from the winds, ocean and beach erosion, many of the bayside areas are still waiting for the water to recede. Joining Gov. Meyer on his tour were state and local officials, Delaware’s Congressional Delegation, DNREC officials and representatives from the US Army Corps of Engineers. While some work has already begun, DNREC Secretary Greg Patterson said there’s less sand on the beaches to work with, so it will take time before some repairs will be realized. It’s hoped that what can’t be done by local and state officials can be helped at the federal level with funding.

For now – the beaches in Bethany remain closed at most dune crossings which have lost the ocean side ramps and end in a steep cliff. Town officials say crews are working to restore access where possible and they will reassess the situation at 2pm on Wednesday.
