Car crash causes thousands to lose power in Long Neck, Millsboro

Thousands were without power this morning in the Millsboro, Long-Neck areas of Sussex County after a car struck an electrical box.

The incident occurred shortly after 4 a.m. Monday, according to officials with the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company who, along with Delaware State Police, were alerted for a vehicle accident on Bay Farm Road at the entrance to William Ritter Manor.

First responders arrived to find a single vehicle that reportedly ran off the roadway and struck an electrical box.

Delaware Electric Cooperative was notified and worked throughout the morning to restore power to the more than 1,300 homes affected as of 6 a.m. Monday. Earlier in the morning, immediately following the crash, over a thousand more were affected.

The vehicle operator refused medical treatment after being evaluated by EMS, according to officials with the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company.

Delaware State Fire Police provided traffic control for the duration of the incident.
