City of Lewes Earns Improved FEMA Flood Insurance Rating

The City of Lewes is improving its rating in the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System — moving from a Class 8 to a Class 7, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Beginning October 1st, 2026, most National Flood Insurance Program policies issued or renewed in Lewes will qualify for a 15-percent flood insurance premium discount. FEMA’s five-year review of the city’s floodplain management program awarded Lewes 1,866 credit points, recognizing efforts to reduce flood risk through stronger regulations, open-space preservation, improved flood data, and hazard mitigation planning. City officials say the improved rating reflects Lewes’ continued work to protect residents, property, and the natural functions of floodplains.
