Smyrna Police say they have arrested a 17-year-old male for carrying a concealed handgun in his waistband, later learned to have been stolen

Saturday, SPD officers were alerted of a shoplifting at the Wawa on Jimmy Drive. Responding officers were given a description of the suspect and his travel direction. They then located the 17-year-old male, whose identity is being withheld, although they do say he is from Smyrna. The suspect was then detained.

Officers recovered a .380 caliber pistol concealed in his waistband. Surveillance footage from Wawa confirmed he was the suspect that shoplifted food items minutes earlier. An investigation uncovered the handgun had been reported missing by Delaware State Police’s Troop 7 in April 2018.

The suspect was charged with Possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, possession of ammunition by a person prohibited, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, receiving a stolen firearm and shoplifting under 1,500 dollars. He was committed to the Stevenson Detention Center in lieu of 9,000 dollars secured bond.
