Early voting opens as Maryland’s June 23 primary nears
THE WEEK OF JUNE 8–13
Maryland’s early voting got underway Thursday ahead of the June 23 primary, with voting centers open across the lower Eastern Shore — in Caroline, Dorchester, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester counties — daily through June 18. A crowded Republican race for governor and a slate of hard-fought Eastern Shore county contests top the ballot.
Search off Ocean City.Authorities searched for Daniel Potter, 49, last seen leaving a West Ocean City marina by boat after concerning statements to family; Maryland DNR and the U.S. Coast Guard joined the effort and located the unmanned vessel as the search continued.
Ammonia release in Milford.Emergency and HazMat crews responded to a reported ammonia release at the Perdue facility in Milford.
Rabies advisory near Salisbury.A rabid raccoon that had contact with a dog prompted a public-health caution — keep pets vaccinated and give wildlife room.
Route 1 & Route 16 interchange nearly done. The new grade-separated intersection near Nassau is close to complete, welcome timing as beach traffic builds.
Gun Violence Awareness Month in Dover.Gov. Matt Meyer marked June as Gun Violence Awareness Month and signed pardons for two residents who turned personal hardship into community service.
Around the region.A Magnolia man was arrested after allegedly pointing a gun at a school bus; State Police arrested a Marydel man after a Kent County pursuit; a North Carolina man was charged in a Laurel copper-wire theft; Choptank Electric issued “Beat the Peak” alerts as heat built; and flags returned to full-staff Friday.

The Maryland Political Review.Former state GOP chairman Dirk Herr broke down the June 23 ballot for Mike Bradley — a nine-candidate Republican field for governor, Rep. Andy Harris’s First District primary challenge from Chris Bruno, and Eastern Shore county races where the primary decides the seat.
A new face in House District 20.Mike Bradley welcomed newly filed Republican candidate Gene DeVornec — Milton’s fire chief and Georgetown’s longtime town manager — who framed his run around collaboration in Dover, infrastructure and EMS, and support for small business.
Sussex County Land Trust. The Trust previewed its annual meeting — Friday, June 26 at the Delaware Botanic Gardens in Dagsboro — spotlighting the Hopkins Preserve and a long-sought 88-acre acquisition near Lewes.
Your News Talk America.Jake Smith and the panel tracked the Iran war’s lurch toward — and away from — a ceasefire, with listeners weighing in live in DIAL.
The week’s dominant national thread was the Iran war. U.S. and Israeli strikes hit Iranian military, air-defense, and communications sites; Iran answered with ballistic missiles and drones toward Gulf states; and Tehran called the ceasefire “practically meaningless” even as reports pointed to a U.S.-brokered framework and convoys moving oil through the Strait of Hormuz. Running underneath it all: the conflict’s pressure on oil, gas, and inflation — though prices eased late in the week, and a blockbuster market debut from SpaceX gave Wall Street something else to talk about.
The Ballot
Maryland votes Tuesday, June 23 — early voting runs through June 18. Watch the nine-way GOP race for governor and the Eastern Shore county contests. Delaware’s General Assembly enters its final stretch before the June 30 close, when late-session bills move fast.
The Games
The Knicks, up 3–1 after a historic 29-point Game 4 comeback, can close out the NBA Finals Saturday in San Antonio. The Stanley Cup Final is knotted 2–2 as Carolina hosts Vegas.
At Home
Flag Day today, Juneteenth on Friday, and Father’s Day next Sunday — with more heat and scattered storms. Mark June 26 for the Sussex County Land Trust’s annual meeting in Dagsboro.
