UPDATED: Somerset County School Superintendent to Step Down Friday


UPDATED – 10/28/25 – After several tumultuous months of conflict, Somerset County School Superintendent Dr. Ava Tasker-Mitchell will step down from her position as Superintendent of Schools on Friday. This was a mutual agreement between Tasker-Mitchell and the Somerset County Board of Education. The Board of Education says additional information and details will be forthcoming.

ORIGINAL STORY – 06/03/24 – A new superintendent has been chosen to lead the Somerset County School District. Dr Ava Tasker-Mitchell has been chosen to take over for the retiring Dr. John Gaddis – beginning July 1st. Tasker-Mitchell was chosen after a national search and approved by the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools.

The Somerset County Board of Education plans to take formal action on Tasker-Mitchell’s contract during their June 17th meeting.
