WINTER STORM: Snowfall on Delmarva

Bear, Delaware was the big winner in Sunday’s Winter Storm Fern updated snow fall totals according to the National Weather Service posted at 2am Monday with 10-inches of snow – followed by Wilmington with 9-inches. In Sussex County Milton and Selbyville show with about 4-inches. Delaware’s heavier snowfall was in Kent and New Castle Counties. The Eastern Shore Counties of Maryland were last updated by the NWS Sunday afternoon and are only showing from 1.6-inches at Deal Island to just over 3-inches in East New Market in Dorchester County.

The University of Delaware DEOS snowfall totals were last updated Sunday and average a little lower – from about 3- to 4-inches in much of Sussex County to 6- to 7-inches in New Castle County.

The methods of collecting the data are different as well – UD has sonic ranging depth sensors set up throughout the state. The NWS takes its data from humans – trained spotters, members of the public and weather stations at the New Castle County Airport and Dover Air Force Base.  The numbers also come from different reporting areas – Delaware’s information comes from Mount Holly, NJ and the Eastern Shore information is from Wakefield, VA.
