DelDOT Brining Roads Statewide Today

A chance of light snow is in the forecast for Wednesday morning. DelDOT officials say crews are brining roads statewide today in preparation. Remember to give the brining trucks plenty of space to work.

Brine has the same melting characteristics of solid rock salt, but since it is applied in liquid form, it is more effective at sticking the salt to the roadway. Pure water has a freezing temperature of 32掳F; as salts dissolve in water, the freezing temperature decreases, which requires colder temperatures for ice to form. Sodium chloride will help prevent ice formation down to 15掳F. It’s also cost effective as it takes four times less salt to brine one mile of road compared to rock salt.
