Unemployment in DE & Sussex County Lower in April
Unemployment in April fell a tenth of a percent from 5.4% in March to 5.3% in April while the national level remained the same at 4.3%. In Sussex County unemployment fell from 5.3% in March to 4.9% in April.
The Department of Labor shows there were 27,100 unemployed Delawareans in April 2026 compared to 22,900 in April 2025.
Over-the-year job losses have been recorded in 6 of the past 7 months with the Leisure and Hospitality sector showing the largest decline with the loss of 1500 jobs from April 2025 to April 2026. Food Services and Drinking Places showed the greatest number of job losses within the sector. Manufacturing lost 1000 jobs over the past year. The Private Education and Health sector showed the highest job increases over the past year followed by Professional and Business Services.
