UPDATED (Monday, 4 p.m.): Capt. Darin Cathell of the Bethany Beach PD says the man who was pulled from the surf yesterday after the lifeguards were off duty was pronounced dead at the hospital around 6:30 p.m. The cause of death has not been determined as of yet, Capt. Cathell said, as they are waiting for the autopsy report. Robert Mauch, Sussex County EMS spokesman, said last night that the victim was pulled from the surf by an off-duty lifeguard.

ORIGINAL STORY (Sunday, 6:30 p.m.):  A man believed to be in his 60’s was pulled from the surf off Bethany Beach early this evening and was taken to the hospital. He was found around 5:25 p.m. in cardiac arrest between Second and Third streets.

He remained in cardiac arrest as he was taken to the hospital. The lifeguards had already gone off duty at 5 p.m. No word as of yet if this were a medical problem or drowning.
