Sussex County Council Meets Tuesday at 10

UPDATED – 06/02/26 – The Sussex County Council met Tuesday morning and began the day with two presentations. Patti Grimes, Executive Director of the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation, updated the Council on what’s going happening there – as well as the new open air pavilion. The Council provides some funding for programs involving the arts for students – both through outreach by the foundation – or on the foundation premises on Route 54. The new pavilion will open for the season on July 8th.

Ring Lardner, Chairman of the Board at the Sussex County Land Trust also updated the Council on a variety of projects that the Land Trust is working on – which have also seen some funding from the County. The Sussex County Land Trust safeguards properties amd their resources that have been entrusted to them – to be sure they are protected, maintained and accessible for future generations.

In Old Business the Council revisited two ordinances that were the subject of public hearings during the May 19th Council meeting. County Administrator Todd Lawson told the Council there would be no votes this week on either ordinance – just updated information from what was said during the public hearings. One ordinance was on the Sussex County Rental Unit Program (SCRP) – the other dealt with design criteria for subdivisions.  Both ordinances are on next week’s agenda – again under Old Business.

There were three Conditional Use applications for public hearing during the afternoon session. Two were approved and one, which did not yet have a referral from Planning & Zoning also had no public hearing after the applicant failed to appear. That application will be heard again during this week’s Planning & Zoning meeting and given a referral for the County Council, but as there was no public hearing, the Council will also revisit this application – Conditional Use No 2631 on behalf of Zion Church Ventures, LLC – with only the information from Planning & Zoning.

Sussex County Council will meet next Tuesday – beginning at 12:30pm at the County Administration Building on The Circle in Georgetown.
