Update | Teen Girl Killed In Utility Vehicle Accident

Updated information released Wednesday afternoon regarding a Tuesday evening crash of a John Deere Gator utility vehicle in the Lewes area:

A 16-year-old female of Delaware was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification is pending notification to next of kin.

A 16-year-old female of Delaware was transported by helicopter to an area hospital with serious injuries. She is in stable condition. 

A 15-year-old female of Delaware was transported by helicopter to an area hospital with serious injuries. She is in stable condition.

A 16-year-old female of Delaware was transported to an area hospital by ambulance with minor injuries. She was treated and released.

A 17-year-old female of Delaware was transported to an area hospital by ambulance with minor injuries. She was treated and released.

The girl who died was a student at Cape Henlopen High School. The Cape Henlopen School District released this statement Wednesday:

The Cape Henlopen School District is deeply saddened to learn of the death of one of our high school students as the result of a tragic accident that occurred on April 6. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to all involved and to the student’s family and friends.

Students age 3-17 who are in need of immediate support are encouraged to call or text the 24/7 crisis hotline at 1-800-969-4357 (HELP) or text DE to 741741. School counselors will be available to students for additional support following spring break. The Delaware State Police Victim Services Unit/Delaware Victim Center is also available to offer support and resources 24 hours a day through a toll-free hotline, 1-800 VICTIM-1 (1-800-842-8461).

A 16-year-old girl has died and four other teens have been injured in a crash in the Lewes area involving a utility vehicle.

According to Delaware State Police, the vehicle, with two seats and a rear utility bed, was traveling on a private driveway off Robinsonville Road at a high rate of speed Tuesday evening when the operator tried to negotiate a curve. The vehicle skidded and traveled off the driveway, struck a tree and landed on its roof.

One girl died at the scene. Two others were hospitalized with serious injuries. State Police said two others received minor injuries.

The name of the person who died has not yet been released.

An investigation into the incident continues, and anyone with information is asked to contact Delaware State Police at 302-644-5020.
