UPDATED: Bicyclist Dies After Crash near South Bethany

UPDATED 7/8/19 – Delaware State Police report that 27-year-old Kelly M. Scruggs of Annapolis died Saturday from injuries she received after her bicycle was struck by a vehicle on the night of July 4th on Route 1 near Evergreen Road in South Bethany.  The crash continues to remain under investigation and anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Sgt. A. Mendez of the Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit by calling 302-703-3269.

An Annapolis woman was injured Thursday night as she crossed Route 1 on her bicycle in the area of Evergreen Road in South Bethany.  Delaware State Police say the bicyclist moved into the southbound lanes – into the path of a Toyota passenger van driven by a 50 year old Pennsylvania man.  He struck the bicyclist knocking her to the roadway.  The cyclist is in critical condition at Christiana Hospital. Police say she was not wearing a helmet and had no working lights on the bicycle – impairment on her part is undetermined.  The driver of the Toyota was not injured – and impairment is not a factor.  Anyone with information on the crash should contact the Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit (302-703-3269) or Crime Stoppers (800-TIP-3333).
