Attorney, deputy attorney general, Clerk of the Peace, Recorder of Deeds, Register in Chancery, Eagle Scout, Rotarian, son, uncle, brother, tutor, political consultant, radio host of the law show and co-host of Tipping the Scales of Justice and friend. That is John Brady.
John passed away Sunday afternoon at his home in Angola after a long illness. He was 66.
Brady was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Wilmington. He attended Salesianum School before graduating from the University of Richmond and Widener University Law School with a certificate from the John F. Kennedy School of Harvard University.
John was a member of the Delaware Bar for 32 years before his retirement last year. He was also admitted to the bar in New Jersey and the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States. Besides representing clients throughout Sussex County, he was a volunteer attorney in the state Office of the Child Advocate, representing children in court, he was an attorney to the State House, a law librarian in Georgetown, town solicitor. John has litigated in nearly every court in the state – and is also part of an elite group of attorneys qualified to argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Throughout his life he held multiple positions with Sussex County, the State of Delaware and elsewhere. John was the first openly gay elected official in Delaware and in his 4-years as Clerk of the Peace in Sussex County he performed over 1000 marriages – including the first legal same-sex marriages in the state in 2013. John was also the last Sussex Register in Chancery before the office was eliminated in 2003. In all, he held three county row offices during his elected tenure.
John has been involved in the Boy Scouts of America since he first joined in 1967 – and worked his way through the ranks to Eagle Scout. John has served as the District chair for the Sussex District of Del-Mar-Va Council and Vice Commodore for Finance for the Northeast Region of the BSA. He was presented with the Silver Beaver Award for outstanding service to the local Council in 2019 and also received the Outstanding Eagle Scout Award from the National Eagle Scout Association. He was presented with the Founders Award for outstanding service.
On Friday, John visited with the Talk of Delmarva’s MJ Powell to thank people for their thoughts and prayers – and to say goodbye and many well-wishers called in from around the country and locally to wish him well.
