Somerset County Sheriff’s Office to Resume 24/7 Patrol Coverage Countywide
Beginning August 20th, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office will restore 24/7 patrol coverage throughout the County. This follows a comprehensive review of staffing levels and operational priorities conducted by the Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with the County Commissioners. The Sheriff’s Office has seen several positive staffing developments which have made the restoration of continuous patrol coverage possible and salary adjustments approved by the County Commissioners have increased interest in employment and increased qualified applicants for positions with the Sheriff’s office. One certified deputy has been hired – and 2 additional experienced officers could be hired in coming months.

In addition, the Sheriff’s Office recently hired three Deputy Recruits who are currently attending the Police Academy. Upon successfully completing their academy training and field training, they are expected to join the agency in April 2027, further strengthening the Sheriff’s Office’s staffing levels.
The Sheriff’s Office has also welcomed the return of two deputies from extended medical leave, providing additional experienced personnel to support patrol operations and other essential law enforcement services.
Sheriff Ronald Howard notes that these staffing improvements have placed the agency in a stronger operational position and will enhance its ability to serve the citizens of Somerset County.
