WGMD Fishing Report 3-1-19

Saturday will be the opening day for Delaware’s freshwater trout season.  Two ponds have been stocked with trout.  Newton Pond near Greenwood in Sussex County and Tidbury Pond near Dover in Kent County.  Competition for a fishing spot is pretty intense at both locations on opening day, so an early arrival before the 7:00 AM start time is advised.  Worms, corn and Berkley Trout Power Bait have been popular offerings.  I have had success with small jigs decorated with yellow twister tails.

Jerry at Taylored Tackle told me crappie were caught at the spillways in Laurel and Seaford.  Crappie jigs did most of the damage.

Boats from Lewes, Indian River and Ocean City have been catching tog when the weather allows them to sail.  The bite has been slow due to cold water, but the tog have been big with some topping the ten-pound mark.

Black sea bass season closed in Virginia on Thursday with excellent catches reported.  Delaware could follow suit in 2020.
