Worcester County Board of Education Employee Charged with Financial Misconduct
The former Chief Academic Officer for Worcester County Schools has been charged with multiple offenses arising from alleged financial misconduct involving School Board funds. Denise Shorts submitted her intent to vacate her position with the school system on March 26 – the Board of Education is expected to act on the separation at the April 21st meeting. Worcester County School officials became aware of potential irregularities through the legislative audit process which began in the fall. The period of July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2025 was audited. A search and seizure of Shorts’ office at the Board of Education was executed on December 13, 2025 and Shorts was placed on administrative leave. In February the Department of Legislative services issued its initial audit findings which referenced questionable purchases by a management employee, which was referred to the Office of the State Prosecutor, whose report is forthcoming. School system officials have cooperated fully during the investigation and additional financial oversight measures have been implemented by the Finance Department.
