DNREC officials say this past summer’s piping plovers had a modest nesting season in Delaware. Officials recorded 7 pairs at The Point at Cape Henlopen and 17 additional nesting pairs were documented at Fowler Beach on Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge – a total of 24 nesting pairs. That’s the same number recorded in 2021 – although more fledglings were produced in 2022 with 34 chicks reaching their flying age at 25 days old. Fowler Beach saw a later nesting season and chick loss was high after several spring storms and predators.
