VIDEO : Juneteenth Holiday Proclaimed

June 15, 2021, the Commissioners joined with Ivory Smith, president of the Worcester County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and other NAACP members to recognize June 19 as Juneteenth in Worcester County. On June 19, 1865, two-and-one-half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved people in Texas and other remote slave states were finally informed that they were free people. Today, Juneteenth is being celebrated to recognize the end of formal slavery in the United States.
