On June 19, 1865, two-and-one-half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved people in Texas and other remote slave states were finally informed that they were free people. This date, which has come to be recognized as Juneteenth, is representative of similar struggles for freedom and equality that are taking place throughout our nation and the world. Juneteenth both signifies a formal end of slavery in the United States and serves as a call to action for each of us to elevate civility, to replace injustice with justice and equality, and to work together to end human trafficking and modern-day slavery.
